The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is one of the cornerstones of the U.S. Navy's air forces. Designed to combine an effective aerial platform for both fleet defense and ground attack, it has a performance envelope in excess of mach 1.8 and can operate at altitudes above 50,000 ft. In 1995 the first flight took place of the so-called Super Hornet or F/A 18E.
Improvements incorporated into this aircraft over earlier versions include more powerful engines, longer operational range, higher take off weight and general improvements throughout the aircraft.
